My goal is to unify figures and the space they occupy as one within the picture plane. Instead of being a separate entity, I want the figure to be integrated into the space it inhabits; the space holds the figure and the figure holds the space. This focus on composition and settling the figure in its environment allows the viewer to interpret the painting as a narrative. I do this by painting the figure and the space around it at the same time; for example, if an arm is the same value as the background behind it, I paint them as one object.
I use this same technique when painting landscapes by integrating sections of color with the focal point and its surroundings. An emphasis on color and visible brush strokes enhances the integration of objects.
