Hel is the daughter of Loki the trickster and the giantess Angrboda. She is the fearsome goddess of death and the sister of the wolf Fenrir and the world serpent Jormungandr. It was Odin the chief of the Aesir who threw Hel down into Niflheim, or the World of Darkness, which is divided into several sections, one of which is Helheim wherein lies Náströnd, the shore of corpses. There stands a castle facing north; filled with terrifying creatures, and the dragon Nidhogg.
