The famous Seamen's Bethel, featured in Moby-Dick. I painted this after sailing into New Bedford, shortly after finishing Moby-Dick for the first time, sitting across the street in the drizzling rain and listening to the wind and the gulls. After painting it, I went inside and talked to the sailors who volunteer there and sat in Melville's pew - welcoming and warm in contrast to the storm and cold outside.
