Tree of Life was inspired by Toni Morrison’s character Sethe from her novel Beloved. In the novel, the character Sethe has scars on her back in the form of a tree. These scars are the character’s most distinguishing feature and are referenced multiple times in the book. Because of the character’s scars and how she got them, she became who she is now. Tree of Life comments on how getting scars is a part of living and these scars shape a person to be who they are.
