Part of the 2024 Fungal Fairies. Found all over the world, though originally from Australasia, veiled ladies are named for the lacy “indusium” that forms as they mature. The white basket has overlapping, though smaller, native range centered around New Zealand. Both species are types of stinkhorn fungi (family Phallaceae), which are known for their odd shapes and fly-attracting odors, which help draw in spore dispersers.
The wing species is the New Zealand antlion lacewing (Weeleus acutus), the sole member of its genus. Similarly unique is the background plant, a species of tree fern - a fern growth habit often found in New Zealand, and somewhat rarely elsewhere.
