Part of the 2024 Fungal Fairies. True to their specific epithet, turkey tails grow in a wide variety of colors and patterns, with each individual fungus producing a matched set of fruiting bodies. As a white-rot fungus, turkey tails also help break down wood, and can be found worldwide.
The secondary species in this piece is black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa), a native North American fruit with a complementary autumn foliage and rich wine-tasting fruit. The wing species is the isabella tiger moth (Pyrrharctia isabella), another herald of autumn when found pre-metamorphosis as wooly bear caterpillars.
