Oni is originally an oil painting. This piece is inspired by Japanese folklore. An Oni is known as a demonic creature which is ferocious in nature but the original meaning of the word is described as hidden or concealed. This influenced me to create my own version with these two quite separate meanings of the same word. "Oni" depicts a woman who is hiding her identity through a mask that represents both the ferocious creature and its literal definition of concealment. However, the mask she wears has started to consume her, smoke is being released, her eyes have become a feral orange shade and she has grown horns.
I wanted this piece to represent how we all wear a façade in one way or another, but sometimes these masks that we present can alter us for worse rather than for better.
