Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.
The three witches of MacBeth, also known as the Weird Sisters or Wayward Sisters, are one of my favourite enigmas of literature.
The witches in MacBeth were only described as bearded, withered crones, which fits in line with the thoughts about witches at that time. I love the idea that these supernatural creatures are seen how the viewer expects them to be seen, which is why I portray them as detached, powerful, not quite human figures. They each represent air, earth and water, which is appropriate to me as they are often depicted meeting around a fire.
