Smilodon fatalis is a species of sabre-toothed cat from the Pleistocene about 0.3 million years to 12,000 thousand years ago. It has mainly been found from North America but also as far south as Ecuador and Peru – which is one reason why I chose to paint it with Peruvian chrysocolla, a minor copper ore.
