Agnes was born in Ursa, the walled capital of Essiana, and is from an ancestral lineage of metalworkers. Her father was a Master Bladesmith and her mother was a Master Armoursmith, so as a child, Agnes became familiar with an assortment of metals, minerals, and materials at the family-owned smithy.
Decades later when her parents retired, she took over the business but wasn't interested in creating the usual broadswords, boots, and chest plates. She decided to stop accepting direct product orders and spent her time exploring the potential of unconventional materials instead.
Her research led to previously undiscovered alloys and the creation of her first signature piece, the Stygian Claymore, aptly named for its pitch-black blade. Sharper and lighter than steel swords, rumours of the “cursed blade” spread like wildfire, and within days, Agnes received death threats but also secret, unbelievable price offers from the military, swordsmen, merchants, and crime syndicates. She sold it to the military since they offered the highest payment.
Agnes knew she had stumbled into something monumental. She purchased a larger piece of land in Ursa and eventually grew the property into what is now the Great Forge of Essiana. Made of white stone and gold, The Forge’s doors only open three days a year for the Auction of Ember and Ashes, where fifty invited guests can attend and bid for Agnes’ new creations. While both government agents and criminals are invited, an unspoken rule forbids any arrests or foul play at the event as initiators would risk making enemies of the other influential attendees and will never receive future invites again.
Agnes now guides the continent’s balance of power by tracking the wealth, priorities, and bidding behaviours of all guests, calculating which items should be released at each Auction, and determining who should be invited to each year’s event. She carries a huge hammer which she uses for metalworking, and has five white stripes in her hair, indicative of the highest social class on the continent.
