Hecate was the ancient greek goddess of Witchcraft, as well as other cool spooky things like Poisons and Ghosts.
Hecate was also known as the ‘triple’ goddess since she was able to see into the past, present and the future, and she was able to thrive in the Underworld, the Heavens, and the regular ol’ surface world. However, the Underworld was her true home, where she held the keys to Tartarus aka the torture-pit of eternal suffering. Her best friends in the Underworld included Persephone the ‘dread queen’ and the Erinyes; winged hags who flogged promise-breakers to death.
She was the only god who the god-king Zeus considered his equal, and after ascending the Olympian throne he showered her with gifts to keep him on her side. Fortunately for Zeus, Hecate didn’t care about power politics. She was content to go about her business with the dead. Every night, she ascended from the Underworld to the human plane, accompanied by the howling of her hell-hounds, and led ghosts in a procession til dawn.
Her symbols included plants with healing and with deadly properties, like wolfsbane and mandrake, and the torches that lit her path through the night. She wore a crown of oak and black snakes.
Naturally, Hecate’s greatest fans among humans were those seeking witchlike powers, and her altars were usually found in places of the ‘in-between’ like crossroads and doorways, where it was believed her powers were strongest.
