He was the last survivor of the explosion which ended the starship; able to scramble aboard the passing debris-chunk at the last moment. The survival suit gave him the ability to survive for an extended period of time, but it had no ability to break the iron grip of the massive planet's gravity field. Thus he was fated to an endless orbit, and in time to almost become fused with his small island of salvation.
