Orchid with Taihu Stone (太湖石)
In Chinese culture it represents integrity, nobility and friendship, all of which are virtues of a perfectly cultured gentleman and scholar.
Taihu Stone is a kind of limestone produced at the foot of Dongting Mountain (洞庭山) in Suzhou. It is used to build rockeries in gardens and for use along the edges of small ponds or lakes, to enhance the beauty of landscape. It is often referred to as scholar's rocks.
The orchid was painted using the Chinese red cinnabar ink.
