Rooted in the rich storytelling traditions of the Kwakwaka’wakw peoples, Raven Steals the Light draws inspiration from the trickster figure Raven, a central character in many stories passed down through generations. As a ‘Namgis First Nations artist, I feel a deep connection to Raven’s transformative role in Indigenous narratives, symbolizing the power of resilience, wit, and the bringing of light to the world.
This piece captures Raven’s daring act of stealing the sun, portrayed in dynamic motion as it escapes with the light in its beak, forever changing the world. With vibrant colors and bold forms, this artwork reflects my cultural heritage and personal appreciation for the role Raven plays in our stories as both a creator and a clever, mischievous figure.
Created using a combination of traditional and digital techniques, Raven Steals the Light is a celebration of Kwakwaka’wakw storytelling and the importance of light, transformation, and the trickster spirit. It’s a meaningful addition for collectors who value Indigenous art and cultural storytelling.
