A watercolour and ink illustration of Sylvia Rivera (1951 - 2002) honoring her and all her work as a trans and queer activist. She is a veteran of the 1969 Stonewall Inn uprising. She was an advocate for those silenced and disregarded by larger movements. Fighting the exclusion of transgender people, especially transgender people of colour, from the gay rights movement.
Born in New York City 1951. Started alongside Marsha P. Johnson the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) around 1971. The group came together to organize and discuss issues facing the transgender community in New York City and they also had a building, STAR House, that providing lodgings for those who needed it and enabled them to get off the street.
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project continues her legacy working to guarantee "all people are free to self-determine their gender identity and expressions, regardless of income or race, and without facing harassment, discrimination, or violence." She passed in 2001 from cancer. May her spirit rest with peace.
