This is an illustration commemorating the 60th anniversary of the first manned space flight by Yuri Gagarin. The drawing was an entry to a space-themed postcard competition, where it was selected as one of three winners.
I wanted the drawing to remind of the feeling of being small under the vast universe, and also respect the history of space exploration. The graphic black and white appearance is inspired by Soviet era space illustrations.
The original drawing is 15 x 21 cm and drawn with Micron fineliners and a ruling pen.
I'm a freelance cartographer and geographer from Finland. I began professional mapmaking in 2019, but I've been drawing maps my whole life. I love mapping fictional worlds in different styles, and sometimes draw maps of our real world too.
