A Beroe, a carnivorous species of ctenophore, swims diagonally across the frame, the circle of its closed mouth pointed upward and just visible through its translucent pink body.
Four lines of rainbow run up from the opposite end of the ctenophore where its fluffy polar fields - equivalent to a brain - poke out from its aboral end. The rainbows are caused by refraction, as the creature beats ciliated comb plates called ctenes, to swim.
Beroe are ferocious predators, and when they find their prey, open themselves seemingly impossibly wide to consume them whole.
