Death and rebirth.
There is a Russian fairytale similar to the Brothers Grimm's "One-Eye, Two-Eyes, and Three-Eyes". A woman had three daughters: the first had one eye, the second two and the third had three eyes. The girl who had two eyes was hated by her mother and sisters. Her only friend was a cow. Once the mother and sisters decided to kill the cow. But the girl didn't eat the meat and kept the bones. Some time later, an apple tree grew in the place where the cow bones were buried. One day, a knight came riding along. He stopped to admire the beautiful tree and asked who it belonged to. Which led to the happy ending, of course...
