Psychotherapy and medication have some things in common. Both can change brain circuits. Psychotherapy, like learning, hypothetically induces epigenetic changes in brain circuits which can enhance information processing to malfunction neurons to help improve symptoms. Medication can change gene expression in brain circuits, and so can environment (stressors vs therapy). Together therapy and medicine can be clinically effective in treating psychiatric disorders. This is why the biopsychosocial model of mental [brain] health is so important.
