The idea for this painting started as a very simple sketch of a girl, just for fun. The concept of having her surrounded by flying origami cranes was then inspired by a lovely present Yen Liao gave me - a huge box full of golden paper cranes!
During the process for this piece, I sketched different poses for the character, made various thumbnails for color and composition and did studies to understand how the golden material reflects light. To make sure anatomy and perspective are correct, I shot photographs for reference and posed a 3D model. To achieve a nice mix of fantasy costume and realism, I researched traditional East Asian fashion, applied some artistic license and used photographs to aid the painting process.
I'm a self-educated concept designer and illustrator from Germany, specialized in environment and character design. Having studied biology, I like using my scientific knowledge as inspiration for new artwork.
