For the Igbo people of Nigeria, the kola nut is a symbol of hospitality, friendship, and respect.
Kola nuts are served to welcome guests at a home or village as part of a traditional ceremony. The nuts are blessed before they are shared.
My first introductions to Nigerian culture were through these fantastic novels:
The Death of Vivek Oji - Akwaeke Emezi
The Fishermen - Chigozie Obioma
I highly recommend these books! As a Korean reading about Nigerian families, there were many cultural aspects that were relatable.
