This is an original black and white acrylic painting made in 2020 by Joel Witiw. The original dimensions of the work are 24"x36". It features my friend's kitten Gem glancing curiously into the lense of a camera. The close-up with a wide angle lense made for a particularly cute distortion that I felt would lend well to a nice animal portrait. The soft kitten smile sold me on this project.
At a distance my paintings tend to give an illusion of photorealism until they are viewed up close to see the brush strokes. The contrasting black and white gives a glowing pop to draw your eye to subjects in the painting. I feel that painting without colour lends to a certain timeless quality. It lets the viewer imagine the colours in the unique way that each of us percieves the world.
