Butterflies will bloom in the branches of twilight, in the shadows of her eyes, in the depths of her heart. And dusk’s enchantments will twine themselves in her hair, offering her the last remnants of daylight.
I created this piece in response to an art challenge, where artists created work inspired by, or derived from, photos that other participants shared. The photo I based this on featured orange butterflies resting on pale yellow flowers; I took that image and ran with it in the direction of fairyland.
This original painting is rendered in painstakingly detailed watercolor — each individual blossom with its deep pink heart and pale blue outlines, each dusky purple branch, each cascade of indigo hair — and the butterflies, painted in rich orange, are detailed with black ink. More ink outlines emphasize the foreground, and the painting is finished off with gold highlights of mica pigment that catch the light and shift in brightness with each change of angle.
