He wandered the wastes in search of a quest to bring him fame. Or honor. Or fortune. Until he found there was none to be had, least not that one man alone could summon up. The only loot he could see was being lugged around by shifty, suspicious prospectors.
Some of these fellers seem to have struck it rich but, for the life of him, the roving knight could not uncover the source. He took to tracking the footprints of the prospectors and the hoof prints of the pack burros beside in an attempt to source the silver.
The prints led from nothing. At least it seemed that way. Gusting sandstorms obliterated and obscured any prints for him to trail. But he found he could follow the tracks the other way.
At then end of those tracks this rambler discovered that the prospector was digging the sand all up. He stalked around in order to see what that feller was up to. Turns out the miner was burying the ore he dug up, stashing it for later. The knight figured he could come back and dig it up later then decided to tail the prospector back to the mine.
Now the miner and his beast of burden knew the landmarks and could find their way back to the mine even in the thick of a sandstorm. The ranger didn’t have such knowledge and when a vicious sandstorm blew in his path was lost and so too was he.
