Screaming sandstorms and scorching sun obscure some stuff so much that someone could be but yards from a horror or two and not even know it. You could get lost with ease, and get eaten with almost as much ease. There are a few rocky routes through the wastes that, if one follows the trails precisely, you won’t get lost on. One of the segments snaking through a gulch had recently become much less safe.
Travelers tell of a treacherous bit of the trail which some stealthy beast roars out of the sands, setting itself upon a single trekker. A beast slayer of some fame opted to venture out and make the desert trail a bit less deadly. An expert tracker, it didn’t take long for this huntsman to trail the gulch beast. The tracks were familiar, he knew he was after a lone lion.
Having felled more fearsome and hulking foes, the huntsman was feeling fully confident that this would be an easy feat. Hell, last beast he took down was some such horror of a hulking mandrill deep down in some dank temple buried miles under the sand. And that thing was a freak of fury in a dungeon like no other. This here was just some big cat.
Sporting one of the heads of the monstrous mandrill was a mistake. The mighty dome of the beast weighed him down and offset him. His vainglory and hubris was his downfall as much as the lion was. Now these bones waltz around the spot where he fell, likely due to some kinda weird magic. There is a witch in these parts after all.
