Lise Meitner (1878-1968) The splitting of the atom—nuclear fission—was a discovery which changed our world. It was Lise Meitner, an Austrian-Swedish physicist who discovered the power of nuclear energy just after her dramatci escape from Nazi Germany. Meitner never worked on the atomic bob research itself. Her lab partner of 30 years, Otto Hahn, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1944— a prize which rightly belonged to both of them.
