This raccoon was surprised while skulking around in the dark, looking for the cornbread my neighbor leaves out. I've been inspired by the raccoons I see in very suburban settings, and I've found that nearly everyone has a raccoon story - funny, cute, or disastrous. The original painting was 12" x 12" on canvas, so you can see some of the canvas detail. I created this by first painting an abstract acrylic underpainting, then painting with oil paints on top. This allows the layers to show through the oil paint and gives a depth to both the raccoon and the background.
