"Satogaeri - Homecoming -"
ABOUT THE PIECE \
"'Satogaeri' is a Japanese word meaning 'homecoming.' As a person who tearily left my home in Japan to come to a new home, the US, with my family when I was in 1st grade; this concept has always been on the forefront of my mind. It's hard to describe the longing for one's original home. It's like a calling that's in your bones, an ever-present sadness and hope all rolled into one.
This past year (2019), I have learned more about Ethiopian Jews and the amazing way they were rescued and brought to Israel during Operation Solomon in 1991. A few months before I left my home, these long-suffering people were being brought to theirs. A place that they had never seen, but that their hearts had longed for for centuries. My situation is nothing like theirs, for they suffered unbearable violence and hardship in Ethiopia. But, I hope my piece pays respect to all those who have a longing for someplace other than where they find themselves." — JUURI
