Throughout Japan's history, foxes and humans have been inextricably linked. The close interaction between the two species spawned human legends and superstitions that held in foxes varying degrees of supernatural power, both good and evil. It's believed that kitsune are masters of shapeshifting, and regularly masquerade as humans. The more mature and powerful a kitsune is, the more tails it will have—up to nine.
