In feudal Japan, wearing two swords - the katana and the wakizashi - was a privilege bestowed upon samurai warriors. When worn together, the pair of swords was called ‘daisho’, meaning ‘big little’ - the katana being the big, longer sword and the Wakizashi being the little, shorter sword.
