In Japanese folklore we find the kitsune, a fox spirit, who are often associated with the Inari, a Shinto kami. The more tails a kitsune has, the older, wiser and powerful it is, nine being the most tails they can get. There are several Inari Shinto shrines in Japan which tend to feature foxes, the most famous being Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto, which is well known for its rows of torii gates.
