Vali was an ancient monkey king with divine strength. His strength was a double edged sword - while he was never afraid to demonstrate courage and passion in the face of danger to protect his kingdom, his quick fierce behaviour also led to rash decisions. This resulted in a tragic misunderstanding that exiled his twin brother, severely affected his kingdom and eventual led to his own death.
This print is part of a 12 part series called Forbidden Forest: an exhibition celebrating the art of storytelling through a series of illustrations of ancient South Asian mythological creatures.
Humble Raja is the name of the Toronto-based design shop Bhavesh & Reena Mistry created as husband and wife. We are both designers who grew up in Canada in South-Asian households. We were always intrigued by our culture, the traditions and the many stories passed down by our elders. Humble Raja explores and shares our culture through graphic design and illustration.
