Mixed media humpback whale painting in watercolour and pencil. Spotting one of these gentle giants can be a rare event, even for those of us who live next door to the pacific ocean. The humpback whale travels incredibly far through it’s migration, not remaining in one place too long. These whales swim close by my home, Vancouver Island, during parts of the year.
I’ve captured them in these mixed media art works, using variety of materials to represent the changing ocean’s colors, moods and lighting. Not content to stay in one place, they see the whole world and are impossible to capture in one image or style.
Because of their huge travel path, these whales are listed as endangered in some countries, but not in others. However, they are still vulnerable to pollution, collisions with ships, entanglement and increasing ocean noise no matter what their official status is in your country.
