Oak galls are ingenious little homes created by gall wasps. The wasp will lay its egg in developing foliage on the tree, and secrete a chemical that prompts the tree to grow a ball-shaped gall around the egg. The gall is made from similar proteins as acorns, and doubles as a safe home and a food source for the growing wasp larvae. Each type of gall wasp produces a different looking gall!
