I was born and raised in the Soviet Union – a country that doesn't exist anymore but that imprinted on my art in a major way. From a very young age, I was taught technical painting and drawing skills in a rigid environment, in which self-expression outside the technically perfect execution was discouraged and frowned upon. Over the years, I've managed to shed that self-censorship, and I am now enjoying the freedom of choosing my own subject matter; while also using the technical savvy I picked up in the Old Country.
