In this short story of horror, written by Edgar Allan Poe, the written structure imitates the situation the main character has found themselves in under the Inquisition’s torture devices. Right from the start, the title features the implements used, and an allusion to how the tale will end. Akin to the horrors experienced in this dungeon however, the narrative’s build is purposefully slow, and antagonistically so. Every slow-passing moment is felt with excruciating apprehension, making for an intuitively-twisted parallel of the story and the way it’s told.
