Dinophysis fortii is a species of photosynthetic dinoflagellate. This species is known to produce toxins that cause diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. From filter-feeding, bivalve shellfish (such as clams, mussels, and oysters) accumulate toxins produced by microscopic algae, resulting in illness when consumed.
