I was in a very H.R Giger mood at the time!
This is inspired by several bizarre revolvers I've seen - the Mauser zig-zag, a revolver rifle with a similarly shaped cylinder, and artwork of a revolver for the game Monster Heart. The frame is covered in what I think is an advanced nanomachine substrate of ceramic and metal that allows it to maintain and heal itself.
All honesty, I know this thing doesn't make much sense. 90% of the reason I did this was just for fun. Why does it look like it's covered in meat? Why's it so pointy? Because it seemed fun.

Most of my work is done by using a "base" so I have a decent grasp of proportions, and then working from there. Eventually, once I have functional lineart, I upload it to photoshop and color over it. I like to use gradients to do so, as coloring something a flat color always felt... unnatural... to me.
