Pina Bausch (born July 27, 1940) was a German dancer and choreographer who blurred the line between dance and theater. She created the company Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, which performs internationally. Bausch’s work redefined ‘Tanztheater’ (dance theatre) by rejecting traditional narrative technique and taking a psychological and emotional approach to choreography. Bausch famously said that she was “not interested in how people move, but in what moves them.” Her work was controversial because it sometimes depicted disturbing and humiliating acts, making it difficult to watch. Bausch was also known for her radical costumes and sets, for example a stage covered in dirt, or in pink carnations.
