Alice McLeod in Detroit, Michigan on August 27, 1937, and is also known by her adopted Sanskrit name Turiyasangitananda. Coltrane was an American jazz musician and composer, and one of the few harpists in the history of jazz. She was married to jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, whose death in 1967 led her to a period of isolation during which she sought spiritual guidance from Swami Satchidananda. After developing her own distinct style of spiritual jazz and recording several influential records, Coltrane left the music business and became the swamini, or spiritual director, of The Vedantic Center, which she founded in 1975, and established an ashram in the Santa Monica Mountains.
