The bat in this illustration is a Brown long-eared bat, or Plecotus auritus, and they are fascinating little things. Considering their size they are remarkable hunters, and their diet consists mainly of earwigs, spiders, beetles, flies and moths. However, unlike other bat's these guys don't just use echolocation to hunt. Some time ago some moths developed a sensitivity to echolocation, and were able to avoid becoming dinner. In response, these bats developed better hearing which resulted in those adorably oversized ears. Whether they use this hearing exclusively or in combination with echo-location and sight is still under study. Unfortunately, the population in the UK has been falling steadily since 1999 and more research is needed to understand why.
