Masks are used by many tribes to represent: a specific figure in tribal mythology, nature's forces, spirits or sometimes what Carl Jung calls "archetypes". I believe that they enter a state of trance while dancing and this state brings sensations, emotions and memories of the ancestors to one who's playing the role, just like what we call nowadays "family constellation", at the end of the day "Bert Hellinger" ,the one who created this therapy, was inspired by the rituals of the African tribes.
This artwork was used as a cover for a book "Sculpteur de masques".
The book is about a young man in a tribe unveiling an ancient belief about the ancestors's masks. It's a mystical fantasy book that deals with themes like: alienation, fear of truth, tradition etc...
