Sketch of Nanzen-ji Temple
Nanzenji is a quintessential Zen temple set in expansive grounds and is considered to be one of Kyoto’s most rewarding temples. The detached palace was established by Emperor Kameyama for his mother, Omiyain, and then converted into a temple in 1291. In 1334 it became first in the ranking system of the Kyoto Gozan (five great Zen temples in Kyoto). Later, Shogun Yoshumitsy Ashikaga ranked it the highest and placed it in control of the Kyoto Gozan. Today it is the headquarters of the Nanzenji School of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism.
