The Pogonites, more commonly known as the Dragon Dunes, are considered the highlight of the Pogona Desert. The characteristic patterns of the sandstone are a result from the erosion caused by the pogonites ascending and descending the lunettes. During the day, pogonites bask at the top of the dunes; at night, they sleep in the valleys between the lunettes.
Adult pogonites are territorial, and they rarely allow other pogonites to share the same basking perch. When confronted with a rival, they engage in a head-bobbing display to determine dominance. This appears to be a highly effective form of communication, as there is no evidence of any pogonites ever coming to blows, in either oral or recorded histories.
