The inspiration for these paintings: “The Five Masters” is my new adopted home town of Waldoboro, Maine: Home of the Five Master Schooner. My studio overlooks a portion of the old shipyard where the first five-masted schooner - “The Governor Ames” - was built in 1888. It's an audacious feat that speaks to the history of the playful, inventive genius and fearless creativity in small towns.
I'm an artist, illustrator, map-maker and educator living and working in Maine. I've created two books of illustrated maps, Plotted: A Literary Atlas, and Cinemaps: An Atlas of 35 Great Movies. My commercial clients include the New York Times, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, and many others, and I do a bit of gallery work as well.
