This image features two of my all time favorite Kirby/Lee creations: Galactus and the Silver Surfer. The concept was the Silver Surfer returning to a hungry half hollowed out Galactus with news of a new world to devour. Galactus’ helmet becomes a sort of cathedral like space.
The painting was created in stages over about 8 months, beginning from a gouache ink resist, and progressing through stages of gouache and watercolor wash layers with colored pencil to add definition and detail. You can see the process over at my site store: andrewdegraff.com/store .
I'm an artist, illustrator, map-maker and educator living and working in Maine. I've created two books of illustrated maps, Plotted: A Literary Atlas, and Cinemaps: An Atlas of 35 Great Movies. My commercial clients include the New York Times, Esquire, Sports Illustrated, and many others, and I do a bit of gallery work as well.
