The initial idea for Caesura comes from a Brothers Grimm tale, 'The 12 Brothers' or 'The Seven Ravens'. Part way through the tale, the brothers are magically transformed into ravens and the only way for them to become human is for the sister to remain silent for 7 years. The sister sacrifices so much of her own happiness by completing this task and although she is somewhat helpless in the tale, she uses her small amount of power to influence the fate of her brothers. In many other Fairy Tales, females are continually subjected to the whim of other characters, like Rapunzel or Sleeping Beauty, this girl at least has some free will. My painting is about exploring the essence of these Fairy Tales the darkness beneath the surface and the perception of women within them.
I am a contemporary figurative painter, continuing my artistic study and practice in London (Wimbledon College of Arts). My current work focuses on Fairy Tales, the Uncanny and Dreams. Through my paintings, I am exploring Fairy Tales in a modern context and how women are portrayed within them. The paintings I create have elements of surrealism with a focus largely upon the female figure.
