It was pleasant going as they travelled ever westward, following ancient trails and winding paths through the lands of forever green. Mickel, when not sleeping in Birker's lap, would bound ahead, or trail behind making a game of the scouting, but still leading Hedda's sure steps on and on and on.
The trees changed from old bent oaks of the eastern forest, among which dark humors had laid across everything as a sour aftertaste, to the lighter lands of the birches and the taller trees, and as the sun warmed them; Birker started to feel as though he had fulfilled some of the promise he had made, back in the bitter mountain winds.
Still, there was a presence in these woods, something subtle, and faint. Something hiding right under his nose. Whenever they travelled in among the large stone outcroppings of the clearings, his eyes would flicker, and his grasp would tighten at the axe handle.
