Forests and more forests for days on end were for Hedda and Mickel the purest joy, but for Birker was a hardship that left him counting days and measuring shadows, willing their way westward. Once they passed the Greenfork, he could swing them south and come into another of the kingdoms of his own people, where he might gather news, and deliver word of his travels. And, find some peace for a while.
His mood improved once they came past a gathering of standing stones he recognized. Long ago, before the lowland dwarves had come out of the hills to settle, and even before the eastern holds had been made, this had been an travellers post, and there were a few of them around the lands. Here one could, if one had the eye for it, find the marks of the old adventurers of whom the sagas told, as well as true directions.
Just a little further now, a week at most, and he would feel the welcome warmth of cavernous halls around him again.
