Some believe that there are spirits of the woods that take the shape of deer, and they carry the soul of the forest in their hearts. They are so entwined with the natural world around them, that mosses, branches and even trees sprout from their bodies. As they age, they travel more and more slowly, weighed down as the heavy foliage engulfs them. Eventually they lie down on the loamy earth and fall into a deep slumber, and are lovingly absorbed into the forest.
Amelia Royce Leonards is a graduate of Montserrat College of Art in Beverly, where she spent four years baffling her peers and professors with drawings of goddesses and antlered women. Her work is influenced by the beauty of ancient myth, folklore, and the natural world around us. She can usually be found somewhere deep in the woods, sketching odd creatures and eating chocolate chips.
